Review: NutriMill Harvest Grain Mill

I got the opportunity to review a New Limited Edition Harvest Grain Mill

in my color of choice. I chose GOLD! First, I already love my current NutriMill. But this one is absolutely beautiful. My NutriMill Classic is generally stored outside my kitchen because I do not love the look of it on my counter. But this new mill is lovely. I actually welcome this addition.

I was wondering about a few things: Milling quality, noise, capacity, and whether it would throw flour dust since it is not self contained like my classic.

Milling quality: I was stunned to find I had much better control and a much bigger range of what I could get in terms of fine versus coarseness of the grain. This was a feature I really loved. I could see the flour coming out and could immediately adjust the coarseness. If it was too coarse, I could run it back through again. With the Classic, the milled flour is contained inside and you had to stop milling, remove, and open the container to see how fine or course it was. This is a large improvement.

Noise: The NutriMill Harvest was a bit louder. 15db louder in my kitchen test. This is a significant difference to my ears, but I do not usually stand immediately next to my mill for more than a couple of seconds so it is not a deal breaker.

Capacity: It holds about 1.5 pounds of wheat in the feeding container. However, there was not a limit to how much I could mill because it mills into a open container. I could continue to add wheat to the hopper until I had enough. My NutriMill Classic could hold enough for 20 cups of flour (about 5 pounds) at a time.

Mess: The NutriMill Harvest did not make a significant mess, even after milling enough flour for 10 loaves of bread. There was a little flour dust, but not more than I had from the classic.

NutriMill Harvest

Besides it’s obvious beauty, which for me is a big plus, I love the open milling. Here are the two reasons:

1. It is several steps to get my flour from the closed mill. Sometimes, the lid on that mill would get super tight and hard for me to open. I know I am supposed to add oil or flour to the rim to keep it moving smoothly, but sometimes I would forget, and then I would have to get help to open the container because I lacked the brute force to turn it. This actually happened on my testing day, and was a solid reminder of why that was so tough.

2. Because this new mill sits right on my counter, and can mill to my exact specifications, I will be much more likely to use it for smaller flour needs. Making one or two cups of flour for a recipe in the Nutrimill Classic was a bit of a pain, but this one makes is a breeze! I can envision me using it much more often just for that reason alone.

A couple of minor things: The NutriMill Harvest has no filter to clean and no cup inside the bowl to keep. I appreciate this simplicity. It’s less to keep up in a very busy kitchen.

The Most Versatile Mill on The Market

From NutriMill “Quickly and easily mill all non-oily grains, beans, and legumes. Shaped from bamboo the Harvest is elegant all while being eco-friendly and sustainable. The countertop size fits easily into any kitchen, and the adjustable texture control knob enables a choice to mill fine, medium, or coarse (cracked grain to a pasty fine flour) to fit your baking needs. The near diamond-hard corundum milling stones offer exceptional cutting performance to mill even the hardest of grains and create high-quality flour.

Milling For Everyone

The NutriMill Harvest was designed for daily use in your home. Grain mills are often thought of as wheat flour and bread-making machines but they can do so much more.

Though the NutriMill Harvest is excellent for grinding wheat it can also grind gluten-free grains, beans, lentils, rice, etc. Add quinoa flour to thicken your soups or sauces, make rice flour for baby food and bread, create your favorite whole-grain cereal with cracked grains, or make delicious brownies with fresh black bean flour.”

If I were choosing a new mill today, either of these mills would be a pleasing choice, but I prefer the new Harvest Mill and am looking forward to many happy baking days ahead!

Please be aware that Le’quip provided me with the New Harvest Mill in my choice of color for the purpose of this review. My original mill (NutriMill Classic was purchased from them over a decade ago and I was still using it!). I am thrilled to get to do this side-by-side comparison and to share my thoughts with you. My Nutrimill Classic has now been gifted to a new owner and I am sure she will get many more years of wonderful freshly ground flour for her family!
