Where is the Heart of Your Home

Most of my readers know by now that the heart of our home is the culmination of each member’s identity in Christ.  If each and every member of our home is living a life to be pleasing to the Lord, then the home will be a pleasant place, a place where we love one another, put one another’s interests ahead of ourselves, and are a testimony to the world of what a life filled with Christ’s love can do.  That, simply put is the heart of our home.

Now, from a worldly viewpoint, the other heart of our home is the living room, our “hub” so to speak.  Here is where we greet one another, snuggle on the couch to read books together, gather with our church family, have family discussions, and with our home businesses, we often have our laptops in there working while all the evening’s activities are going on around us.  Our living room is also the “sick room”.  When someone gets sick, the couch is the place they lay with their pillow and blankie so that they can be lovingly tended to by others, even as we go about our daily work.

This is also the room where we greet our guests.  I cannot even name all the precious visitors we have had there:  grandparents, cousins, aunts, uncles, book club girls, our minister, missionaries, neighbors, customers, and others.

The living room is often where ideas are born, discussed, rehashed, debated, rejected, affirmed, and acted upon.

Several years ago a friend gave me a certificate for a “free room makeover consultation.”  This company would come in, look at what you already have around your house and re-do a room with your own stuff.  I picked the living room and she made this room a very stylish room.  She whisked away all the clutter (imagine that!) and placed items so beautifully and artistically that now everything in that room has a very specific place and there is little space for clutter.  This was terrific because now, the “heart of my home”  is very easy to clean and have “company ready.”  This might be something to consider if you like to have guests over to visit, or would like to do so more.

Here is what I would like to know:  Where is the Heart of Your Home?

Happy Homemaking!

The heart of our home is our bedroom. Everyone comes in to our room in the morning and piles on the bed and snuggles and talks about things. It is a very special time which we have done since they were very very little.

The heart of our home? It’s the love we share…but love can be transient, and fade with time or circumstances. True love only comes from the Lord Jesus Christ. Because of His unconditional love for us, we have His love to share with each other. In the kitchen, the living room…We don’t have a dining room, but a big kitchen table with benches seems to be where people always end up. A big bay window there lets us look out at the garden, the trees, the pasture. We do school at the table, eat, talk, play cards, and discuss family issues. I like our house, but I LOVE our home, because true love is there, shared by those I love!

You are so right that the Heart of the Home is Christ…on the physical side of things the Heart of our home ironically is the laundry room because it is also our classroom… When we made the decision to homeschool 18 months ago I was trying to figure out where to put our school stuff.. The only room with enough plain wall space was the laundry room and since we are in there doing laundry daily it made sense… it is also one of the few spaces with lots of metal surfaces for magnets… (washer and dryer both are metallic.)

The heart of our home is definitely Christ as well! As far as physical space goes, we have an open floor plan, so I’d have to say it’s the kitchen/living room. I can monitor everyone’s schoolwork while I’m cooking. Our couch is great for snuggling & reading or watching a movie. The kitchen table is used for copywork and crafts as well as family meals.

I would have to agree that Christ is the center of our home, wtihout him in our lives we are and have nothing ! What a great God we serve. He has been the best example to see how to have a home. Love, kindness, gentleness, & a servants heart are a few of the lessons that he has taught us in our home. Everyroom is great if he is there with us. We pray that your children will be blessed by your generous spirit to share with them. God Bless you and your family for sharing with all of us your hearts and knowledge..

The heart of our home would definitely be our dining room. That is where we as a family pray together, play games, study, read, and of course, eat. Christ has truly blessed us, and I’m so thankful for our dining room table. Such wonderful memories are made there.

  7. Kathy

Christ is the hert of our home also. Congratulations to you all.

  8. Ruth

The heart of our home – People with Christ as the centre. The rooms all have a different place but it is the people in my home which make it alive. My husband found this out recently when he shifted house while the rest of us were away. May the Lord bless Christina and Jonathan..and may they remember that, even if they don’t win and money is tight, times of relying on the Lord each day for the provisions you need can be an even greater blessing than having everything amazingly provided. Bless you in your pregnancy also and in serving the Lord as He calls each day.

The heart of my home is the living room. That is where we do school, and sit after as a family. It is where we gather for holidays, where we gather with friends, and even just sit together and be quiet. But no matter where we are or what we are doing, Christ is at the heart of it all.

Thank you so much for writing this blog. It is a blessing to so many!
With Christ being the center of our family, the “center” of our home is the living room. We have such a small amount of space and every room enters into the living room. And we really put the LIVE in living room! We pretty much do everything in there. Our kitchen eating space is so tiny that we eat in the living room and save the table for school.
It’s really amazing… when you make Jesus Christ the center – the room you have is just enough!

  11. Susan

    Jesus is our heart!

  12. Jennifer

Amen! Congratulations to your whole family with all of your wonderful news! Isn’t it wonderful how God sometimes showers us with more blessings than we ever thought possible?

  13. Anne Jones

The heart of our home is hands down the kitchen! My favorite kitchen when our kids were younger was the one that had a conference table in it and a couch. Games, eatting, school, art projects, pulling baby teeth, etc…always happened there. Now that the kids are older the kitchen is still the place where big news is shared! Such a great room! Best wishes to the Russell family and all of their marvelous news! Love you guys!

  14. Candy Foote

I hope you win the washer and dryer!!!

  15. Valerie Cummins

The heart of our home is our kitchen and LR as we gather to cook meals together in the kitchen and then have our family time in the LR. It allows a place of rest, comfort and socializing about our day or the coming events. It is also a place of a quiet solitude after a busy day as well for my hubby and I.
Blessings to your family as you add 2 new additions, Jonathan and your little blessing.

  16. Sara

Congratulations to Christina and Jonathan… and I hope you win!

  17. Lynn

When life is as it should be, Christ is the heart of our home. When it gets stressful, or chaotic, I know just where to straighten it out – if I stop long enough to think, and then pray. The living room is the central room in our home. I hope to do some remodeling/expansion to have a kitchen/dining/living space, instead, but for now the living room is where we live.

  18. RaShell Southerland

How sweet to want to win this for your daughter and soon to be son-in-love. I hope you guys win!

  19. Laurie

Wonderful article Malia! Our hearts are with Jesus and He’s the heart of our home too! Thanks for sharing your wonderful thoughts from your heart!

  20. Susan

Because Christ is the center of our home, the heart of our home is anywhere we are all together. Often the kitchen and living room but also in the dining room, backyard or Saturday morning group snuggle time :).

    Have a blessed day!
    Susan

  21. Sara

The heart of our home is our family! Room-wise I’d have to say the family room is where we spend the most time together- We homeschool too, and that’s were the stuff is. I have enjoyed reading your blog.

  22. Robyn

The heart of our home is Christ. If I were to name a room it would be the kitchen/dining area. So much goes on there!! God Bless!5

  23. nancy

    blessings to you all!!!

  24. Tina

For us it is definitely the living room too. It is where we gather for family worship, “everydays” and holidays. It is where songs are sung, books are read, and love freely given.
Congrats to the newlyweds and to you and Duncan!

  25. Leah

Definitely agree that Christ is the heart of our home! In a physical sense, our schoolroom/dining room is the heart of our home. We spend most of our time in it eating, playing or doing school. 🙂

I hope your daughter and future son-in-law win the washer and dryer!

  26. Karyn

The heart of our home is our family room. We do so many fun things in the living room–play games, our family devotions, watch movies together, etc….Congratulations to you all and to your daughter–I hope you win the washer and dryer for them.

  27. Courtney

The heart of our home is Jesus! I’m so excited for your family-I hope you win!

  28. Suzie

The heart of our home is wherever I am! …usually the kitchen!

Congratulations on the new son-in-law and the dear little baby. We will pray for a safe pregnancy.

  29. Cheryl

I hope you win the contest. I’d say the heart of our home is the kitchen.

  30. Rebecca

The heart of our home is the “supper table.” Now, with a busy family and most of the children are adults, it is not that often our schedules work to eat supper everyday. But the “supper table” I am talking about, is one that has endured all the changes life has given us. The supper table is the place we meet with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, where we “feast on His Word” and read and pray. Sometimes this is alone or with the whole family. This has been the heart of our home.

Your website has been an awesome inspiration. Thanks for all your work. Congratulations on your daughters wedding! We had our first daughter get married in March, 2009.

  31. Rebecca Kvenvolden

I agree as well.. my house is a small rundown building with thin walls and peeling paint, but in Christ, we all have a mansion, a home that never lets us down and which gives us a solid future! As for an actual part of our house, i’d be torn between the dining room where we share 3 meals a day and great conversation and have announced babies and laughed and cried, and our bedroom, where i have nursed my new twin boys almost continually since they were born, where dh and i cuddle up and watch a movie, where i scrap, etc.

  32. Monica Rathmann

Christ is the heart of our home! We spend the majority of our time in the living room and a close second would be the dining room/classroom! These two rooms are connected so it is all one big space. Hope you win this contest!

  33. Heather

The Kitchen and family room. But we also have a very large covered back porch with a huge granite patio table (seats 8-10). We end up eating there most meals and sitting after meals to watch the kids play in the back yard. The heart of our home is sharing Christ day in, day out.

  34. Jennifer Ott

Malia- Your site and your newsletters have blessed our family and encouraged me to share so many things with my own children that I don’t think I would have thought to. I have shared your articles and your site with so many in our home school support group and we mom’s love to get together and talk about what we just learned from your site.
God bless your new additions to the family! You are all in our prayers. Best wishes for all.
    J.

  35. Suzanne

Thanks for a good post on the heart of the home. Ours is the kitchen, although the living room comes in a close second.

  36. Julie

so excited about all the good news! Your family has been such a blessing to mine, Thank you!

  37. Ashley

Congratulations on the wedding & on your new blessing also!!
We try to make Christ the Heart of our home but we definitely need to do a better job…
The room that is the heart of our home is our living room. This is where we are most of the time.. Where we sit & talk, I read to the family, many days my children do school at the coffee table. This is where my husband plays & wrestles w/his sons very often! =oD Hope you win!

  38. denise

The heart of our home is our living room.We do school there, watch movies, relax and all sorts of other things. Hope that Christina and Jonothan win the washer/dryer set.

  39. Kim

I love how another person put it earlier on the postings list:”The “heart’ of our home is Jesus Christ. The “hub” of our home is the dining room.” Our “hub” would be the back part of the house, which includes the kitchen and family room. This is where the family eats and visits about their day, where my kids help me cook, where we have pajama parties and eat popcorn and M&M’s while watching a movie on a Friday night, where we visit with our friends and family.

    Good luck on the contest!

  40. Kathryn

The heart of my home? Jesus Christ. We try to keep him center. We are often not successful. Sometimes the center is actually my son. Or daughter. Or the TV. Or the computer. Or me, me, me. But blogs like this help bring me back. Thank you.

  41. Doni Hallabrin

Hear of our home is Christ and the
church and Home. We make try to make the most of all those.

  42. Michelle

I’d have to say the heart of our home is also the kitchen. When family comes to visit, we usually stand around the center island while I am preparing the meal. The kids come and find me there while they are working on school work in the adjacent room. It is, by far, my favorite room in the house!

  43. Natalia

Great post, Malia! I enjoy your blog. And congratulations to Christina too!

  44. Marlene

Thanks for all the wonderful ideas. The heart of our home has to be the livingroom/diningroom. It is where we all gether to enjoy one another. Congrats on the two new additions coming into your home!!! 🙂

  45. Mary

The heart of our home is the kitchen, where we gather around the table for meals and to share the day’s happenings. Congratulations on all your good news!

  46. Bethany

The heart of our home is my husband. He is a dear, godly man who lives to serve God. He draws the family with him to ministries, blesses us with ‘goodies’, teaches us at family altar, plans good things for us, and fervently prays for us. I can’t imagine what our family would be like without him! He has long talks to the children when they need someone to come along side and meet them where they are. He can be stern when sternness is needed and can keep things running smoothly. Everything is better when Daddy is here. He is the heart of our home, like his father was the heart of his home before him. I praise the Lord for him.

  47. Emily

The heart of our home would be the kitchen. It is where we spend most time, but the 2nd would be our bedroom. This is where we have our heart to heart discussions with our kids. It is also where we spend time praying with our kids.

  48. Angie

God is also the heart of our home. As for physical space though, our living room is the heart. We have cozy reclining couches and (in the winter) a warm fire going in the fireplace. This is where we have family discussions, play games, watch movies, recline for a mid-afternoon nap, have company, fold laundry, do homework, and (for me the teacher) grade papers.

  49. Krisann

Congratulations to you and to your daughter! Good luck in the contest.

  50. Jennie

Christ is the Heart of our Home and our favorite room is the kitchen since most of our activities are centered in this room such as: prepare meals, eat, sit down for desserts and a chat, make candies, bake, read, board games, do school, art projects, science projects, family meetings, family prayer & devotions, club meetings, visit with guests, or watch the birds in the feeders out in the back yard.
