Our first date was a movie, followed by dinner.

I remember the evening so vividly. We went to see the movie: Child’s Play (AKA Chuckie) and I had the audacity to laugh through most of it. It was meant to be scary, but the quality of the movie was so poor that I laughed through much of it. No one else in the theater found it funny.  Perhaps Duncan enjoyed me laughing through the whole thing because he did not give up on me right then and there.

The movie was at Showcase Cinemas. It’s gone now, and in it’s place is the new Costco in town.

We followed it up with food at Steak and Shake. For our 25th wedding anniversary, we rented Child’s play and ate Steak and Shake. I think I slept through some of it this time through, Our kids kept walking by and asking WHY we were watching it. 🙂

That was back in 1989. We had been friends for a few years before we ever dated. We have been together so long that we have seen many businesses close. The hall where we had our wedding reception was recently demolished. My high school is gone. But our love still remains. I cannot even begin to imagine where my life ends and his begins. Our days are so entertwined that I can’t recall how a day begins and ends without him at my side.

Part of what has kept our love alive is the continued commitment to date nights. Each week, we do our level best to figure out a way to go on a real date, without children. We do allow the babies under 1 to come on dates because they often just tuck into their little carseats and snooze anyway, and I am highly protective on the littlest additions. But otherwise, it’s just us, and perhaps another adult couple. We still go to the movies on a regular basis.

One movie we will be adding to our date night rotation is Forever My Girl, being released in theaters on January 19, 2018. Since January is my birthday month, I fully intend to watch a chick-flick. 🙂

Synopsis: Forever My Girl tells the story of music super-star Liam Page (Alex Roe) who left his bride, Josie (Jessica Rothe), at the altar choosing fame and fortune instead. However, Liam never got over Josie, his one true love, nor did he ever forget his Southern roots in the small community where he was born and raised. When he unexpectedly returns to his hometown for the funeral of his high school best friend, Liam is suddenly faced with the consequences of all that he left behind.  Forever My Girl is an uplifting romantic film about second chances.
