I love anything that we can use along the way as a learning experience. My children LOVE book, love to read, and love to be read to.  If the literature we read serves an educational purpose, even better! I was very excited to have the opportunity to review and use four of these fun books in our homeschool. But I have to admit it was not a lot of work on my part. When my mom stopped over, as usual, she read the children stories. Including this one:

you-and-me-2This story was about life in Colonial America. Basically, the story goes through a typical day in the life of a person living in a particular time period. It starts by sharing some of the most common names of that time period, and talks about the religious beliefs prevalent in that time. Then it discusses, in a child-friendly story form the political issues at the time and the hardships the people faced coming into a new country. It talked about the tools used in the time period, as well as food that was consumed and how it was procured. The book also tells what “you” would be wearing if you lived in such a time period. It also goes over the games the children played. My children sit and listened attentively to the story, not really suspecting they were doing history at the same time. These books were a little above Rebecca (3) and Autumn’s (3) comprehension level, but they enjoyed the story. Like many books in our home, these will be read repeatedly and will become part of their banks of knowledge.

Daniel also enjoyed listening to the story. He is the age where he did not want to “sit down with theyouandme1 little girls for story time” but he kept creeping by to listen.  Later, he asked me to read the story to him. And David (11) is “secure enough in his manhood” that he simply picked up the books to read them- all of them. Cover to cover. He said they were “neat” and liked how the stories gave history but made it very kid-friendly.

The other books in this series are written in similar fashion. We loved them, and I really liked the illustrations. They were simple, yet engaging. These books were varying in length, making them appropriate, in some cases for younger children to read or have read to them over several days in small chunks, but an older child could breeze through them in half an hour or less.

These are really nice books with lovely illustrations. I recommend them as a supplement to history learning for homeschooled and non-homeschooled families.
