My husband and daughter had the pleasure of recently viewing the family comedy Here Comes the Boom, starring Kevin James, Salma Hayek and Henry Winkler. Scott (played by Kevin James) is a high school biology teacher who has lost the enthusiasm and motivation he once had for teaching. Budget cuts threaten to end the music program from their school, along with the job of another teacher. When certain circumstances introduce him to the world of mixed martial arts (MMA), Scott discovers that there is money that can be made from MMA, even when you lose a match. He decides that he will try to save the arts program by making money as an MMA fighter.
The first thing I had to reconcile was that while this is a family movie, the underlying theme is a fighting sport. The fight scenes had a much of a slapstick feel to them, but many realistic fighting elements and end result (i.e. bodily injury) were present. That being said, you will need to use parental discretion on whether this particular movie is appropriate for your own children.
There were good elements throughout this movie. The main character is motivated to save his friend’s job and the children’s much-needed music program, and is willing to sacrifice himself for a greater cause. The romantic interest Scott displays for the school nurse, Bella (Samla Hayek), is kept at a conservative and appropriate level to be safe for your children. The humor is pretty clean, making it for a good comedy to watch with your family as well. In addition, if you are a fan of professional MMA, then you will get a treat of a few cameos from those involved in the sport.
Overall, this was an entertaining family movie. My daughter and husband certainly enjoyed the opportunity to view it. If you are looking for a comedy for your family, then consider watching Here Comes the Boom.
